Dead Media

This weekend our second Dish Network DVR suffered catastrophic (love that word) hard drive failure. In less than 2 years time, we've had to get a new unit because Dish Network DVRs suck. They have crappy service, and they are charging us shipping & handling in order to send us a new box.

Ale and I cleaned out out VHS chest last night. We had a grand purge and pitched dozens of video tapes. At least 15 Simpsons tapes, 10 Brasillian Carnival tape, great masterpieces such as Poison Ivy, Palmetto, An Incomplete The Prisoner Series, Mystery Men, 4 Rooms and assorted crap we haven't watched for years.

It was weird. Why did we keep it all? Do I really have to keep the missing episodes of G vs E? Yep. Media is our external memories, storybooks on demand and our collection is a history of our former selves and our tastes. At some point I thought the menage a trois between Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Matt Dillion in Wild Things was kind of hot, but I never watched it again after I recorded it.

We collect because that's what we do. They are our memory totems. And sometimes they have to go to make way for the new.

I'm sure one day we'll do the same for our DVD's when the new delivery system becomes marketable.
